Fingolfin, prince of the Noldor
But second son of second wife
No love lost between Fingolfin and Feanor
Yet revolt he joined
And Valinor he fled
Deserted by Feanor
Long march across Helcaraxe
Grinding ice
Bitter cold
Awaited him
Crown given to him
High King he was
Of all elves
Long the seige of Angband
Long the happiness of elves!
Yet not long enough
In Dagor Bragollach he saw
Death and destruction
The star of the Noldor fall
Enemies close in around them
The rising tide of darkness
And despair overtook him
Drowning him
To Angband’s very gates
He walked alone
To single combat
Morgoth he challenged
The Dark Lord accepted
And the battle began
Seven great wounds Fingolfin dealt the Vala
But at last he fell
Broken neck and broken soul
To wolves would Morgoth cast him
But Thorondor saved the king
And took him to fair Echoriath
There to look ever on Gondolin
But Gondolin burned
And Fingolfin’s despair well-proved
The Noldors' star fell
Yet Earendil’s star rose
Of all the Silmarillion characters, I think I like Fingolfin least. He irritates me. There he is, fighting a hopeless battle, and his elves are getting slaughtered, and instead of doing what a normal, rational person would do and retreating, he marches right up to his enemy's gates and challenges him to battle. He abandons his people when they need him most! I guess he must be all depressed and suicidal, but it is irritating.
